Hi Friends!
Have you heard of Marcel the Shell? I had never heard of Marcel until this past week when my daughter, Ariel, introduced me to him. Marcel the Shell is quite popular on YouTube. Once I watched the first video, I was hooked. There are three videos in all and I think the first and second one are the best.

Oh, there's more! There are two books about Marcel the Shell.
I shared the first video with my class and they loved Marcel, so I ordered the books. They were so excited when the books arrived.
Marcel the Shell is loved by kids and adults alike. Check him out!

Here is my favorite of the three videos:
Hi Friends!

Do you like visiting other teachers' classrooms?? I enjoy walking around and asking questions about things I see that I'm interested in knowing more about. I've learned so much from my teacher friends over the years. I have one particular friend, Mrs. Olson, who loves finding ways to engage her students. This fall she added a "recording booth" to her classroom after her school implemented a new technology plan in which all of her students would have their own iPad. I was intrigued the minute I saw it and had to learn more about how it's used in 3rd grade classroom.

First of all it's not a real recording booth like you might see in a recording studio. It's actually a zippered wardrobe rack from IKEA. Mrs. Olson told me that she wanted a space for students to feel comfortable recording on their iPad without others looking at them. Students are allowed to go inside, one at a time, to record on their iPad and then send their recording to their teacher to view later. (They use an app called Quick Voice.) This is done during center rotations, so most students can use the booth at least once a week. Students are given assignments such as recording information about a text they are reading or explaining a math strategy and why it works. Mrs. Olson says that the assignments are based on whatever they are currently studying in a variety of subject areas and it's a great way to check for understanding.
Hi Friends,
It's hard to believe it is NOVEMBER already! This is the time of year when many of us teach our students about the First Thanksgiving. We usually include some kind of writing activity in which we ask our kids to share what they are thankful for in their lives. Last year I wrote a post about grateful journals or "G" journals. I thought this might be a good time of the year to share it with you again. The original idea for "G" journals came from my friend Tammy over at Forever in First. You can read her post about them {here}.

I give each of my students a small "G" journal the first week of November. I ask them to write and draw one thing they are grateful for each day. I have them do this every day until Thanksgiving break and then they take their "G" journals home and share them with their family. Here are some pictures:)
Here's another use for those mini photo albums you can buy at the Dollar Store. I fill them with sight words. Hi Friends,

When I was in fourth grade, I learned to sign the alphabet so that I could send secret messages to my friends across the classroom. That was over 40 years ago and to this day, I can still sign the whole alphabet. I've always been intrigued with sign language and wanted to learn more than the alphabet. So, I bought a few simple sign language books and watched a variety of YouTube videos.

I've shared my interest in sign language with my kids at school over the years. The kids LOVE learning sign language. I usually start with the alphabet and some simple words and build on from there. I've found a couple of great resources this summer and ordered them to use in the fall with my first graders.

Before I share the resources I bought, I'd like to share a YouTube video I came across on the Nellie Edge website.

The first resource I found was the Nellie Edge ABC Phonics Sing, Sign, and Read! This book has full color pages with each of the alphabet letters along with the sign for each letter and a picture of a word that begins with that particular sound. This book goes along with the video.
When my son, Austin, was a little boy, I used to make up bedtime stories in which he and his cousin, Mason, were the main characters. These stories took them on adventures in a variety of settings. Each setting had its own set of problems, but Austin and Mason were able to solve them and emerge as heroes in all of the stories. I loved making up these stories and Austin begged me to retell the same ones over and over again. Austin is 21 years old now and still remembers some of those stories.

Kids love to hear stories as well as create them. So, when I saw Story Stones on Pinterest, I thought I could use them with my class in a fun way to make up stories and review story elements along the way. I decided to make my own Story Stones because they are a little pricey if you want to buy them.

The Story Stones I made include pictures of a variety of characters, settings, and things that may cause problems and/or offer solutions.
I plan to teach my class how to use them after spring break. I will model how to do this with the whole class at first, but then I'll have them work in groups. I'm not sure how other teachers use Story Stones, but here's how I'm going to use them:

1. Put students in groups of 4.
2. Place 12 Story Stones in a bag and have each student take 3
(No peeking).
3. The student with a character(s) or setting will go first. This student begins making up the story by introducing the character(s) or setting. Why? Because we know that authors introduce the setting and character(s) at the beginning of the story.
4. Continue in a clockwise manner. Each student must add to the story using his Story Stones. You can only use one stone at a time. Keep in mind that your story must have a beginning, middle and end as well as all the story elements (setting, characters, problem, and solution).
5. Have fun! Stories may be silly, sad, scary or outrageous, but they can't involve violence on any kind.

Here are the materials I used to make my Story Stones:

I'm sure all of you have seen this quote floating around on Pinterest. I just love it! However, I changed one word in this quote to fit my post today. Can you guess which one? I changed "home" to "classroom." I think the message, either way, is extremely important.

I've worked really hard to fill all the nooks and crannies in my classroom with lots of books and reading materials. I strongly believe that my students LOVE to read because they have access to so many wonderful books and reading materials on a daily basis. I give my students lots of time throughout the day to read. Here are some pictures of my classroom library and other nooks and crannies in my classroom.
Most of the reading materials I have in my classroom were purchased by me over many years. When I first started teaching in 1986, I walked into a classroom that was filled with desks and a set of basal readers. That's it! I started a classroom library that first year with just a few books of my own.
My class learned all about the Chinese New Year which began this year on January 31st and lasted two weeks. We learned some interesting facts about how the Chinese celebrate the new year. We did this by reading books, watching videos on You Tube and doing research on the internet. Here are some of the books we read:
Hi Friends!

We all know how powerful it is when students can teach something to one another. It's been one of my goals this year to give my students more opportunities to do this. In order to be able to teach someone something, you need to understand what it is you're teaching and be able to explain your thinking in a way that others can understand. I think this quote by Einstein sums it up:

Here are a few ways I've encouraged my students to teach others:

1. When a student brings something from home that they've made and others show an interest, I encourage them to teach others how to make it. For example, I had a girl in my class that made some of those rubber band bracelets. Everyone was interested in how she made them. So I asked her if she would like to teach everyone how to make them and she said yes. I went out and bought lots of the rubber bands in a variety of colors. The next day she worked with small groups of kids and taught them how to make their very own bracelet. What a teacher she was! She explained how to make the bracelet as she slowly and carefully put one together in front of her small group. Then she guided and helped each student as needed. The kids were so engaged and made some beautiful bracelets.

2. Another way I've encouraged students to teach others is through class projects. My students worked together to create a large mural depicting the story of the First Thanksgiving. We hung it up in our classroom and invited other classes to come and listen to us share what we learned.

When we learned about the signs of fall, we made posters and shared them with the first grade classes. Each child from my class shared his/her poster with a small group of first graders. They had to teach the younger kids about the signs of fall. (Sorry, no pictures.)

3. Finally, I try each and every day to let my students know how much I value them. Kids have so much to offer if we just give them opportunities to share what they know. It doesn't just have to be what they've learned at school either.

Maybe you could have a "Kids Teaching Kids" time each week and students could sign up to teach something to the class.

Hi Friends,
Those of you that know me personally, know that EVERY new year I resolve to lose weight. In fact, I plan a weight loss challenge at my school every January. I'm usually good for the first month or so and then I fall back into my BAD eating habits. I don't know why I do it. I just do it EVERY time. Maybe this year will be different.

My daughter has great eating habits. Here's a picture of her when she was training for a fitness competition. She has more will power than I do.
I bought an Elf on the Shelf book last year and read it to my first grade class. The book came with an Elf which we named "Jack." My first graders really enjoyed the story and couldn't wait to find Jack when they came to school each morning during the month of December. As some of you know, I looped to 2nd grade with my class this year. Well, Jack arrived yesterday and my kids were so E-X-C-I-T-E-D to see him again! I was surprised to hear how many details they remembered about Jack.
Here's what I heard the kids saying to each other:

"You can't touch him or he'll lose his magic!"

"He's going to fly back to the North Pole and tell Santa everything you do!"

"He can see you all the time."

"Jack likes to find new places to sit when he comes back every day, so you

have to look for him."

"He's a nice Elf because he tells Santa the good stuff you do and

just a little bit of the naughty stuff."

This year I decided to make a little booklet for my kids to draw and write about where they find Jack in our classroom each morning. I thought this would be a great way to work on position words as well. Here's a picture of booklet.

Yesterday morning we found Jack above the light switch in our classroom.

This is the first page in our booklet. I asked the kids to highlight the position word.

I didn't have the kids draw Jack because I knew it would take too much time.

Instead, I attached a small picture of Jack on the end of a popsicle stick so they

could place Jack where he belongs after reading the sentence.

Hi Friends!

What are you grateful for this time of year? If I had to name my top three, I would say my family and friends, my health, and a teaching job that I love!

Last year I was reading a blog post by my friend Tammy at Forever in First about Gratitude Journals. She calls them "G" Journals. You can read her post {Here}.
I was really excited about making "G" Journals for my students so they could draw and write about what they are grateful for. I thought November would be the perfect month for my students to think about what they are thankful for.

First we brainstormed and made a list of all kinds of things that we are grateful for. Then I gave each student their very own "G" Journal. Every school morning during the month of November, I place the "G" Journal on each student's desk. They draw and write one thing they are grateful for each day. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, their journals are full of thing they are grateful for. I send the journals home the day before Thanksgiving so they can share their them with their family.

Here are some pictures of my students' Gratitude Journals:
Today I'd like to share some new activities for the Daily Five
Work on Writing & Word Work. I taught first grade last year and looped to second grade with the same kids and wanted to change up some of my Daily Five activities. These activities are NOT the only writing or word work activities we do each day. I have a 60 minute Writer's Workshop and a 30 minute Word Work block in the morning. My Daily Five takes place in the afternoon every day of the week EXCEPT Wednesday.

I am LOVING the cool weather her in the Midwest. I don't know about you, but I am a better teacher when the weather is cool.

Today I'd like to share something new I am doing in my classroom this year. I'm calling it Book Share. Book Share is a time for Guest Readers to come and share their favorite picture book with my class. They can share other reading materials as well. Guest Readers are encouraged to tell the class how important reading is in their lives and give examples of how they use reading at work and in their personal lives. I really want my second graders to hear from someone other than me how important reading is and will be in their lives.

Anyone can be a Guest Reader. I started my Book Share this year by inviting everyone on staff at my school. I sent out personal invitations asking anyone interested in being a Guest Reader to sign up. Later, I plan to invite parents, school administrators, community members and students. Book Share is done on Friday mornings between 8:30-9:00.

My second graders were so excited when our first Guest Reader showed up this past Friday. Our fifth grade teacher, Miss Uzzell, shared her favorite picture book called
My Little Sister Ate a Hare by Bill Grossman. After reading her favorite book, Miss Uzzell shared her Kindle and explained what kinds of reading materials she has on it. Many of my students had never seen a Kindle before, so this was a great learning opportunity for them. Miss Uzzell did an awesome job!! When she was done, I took a picture of her holding her favorite book for our Book Share Wall. Here are a few pictures of our first Guest Reader & our Book Share Wall.
Have you seen these cute bird clips by DCI. They come in a set of 16. I wanted them as soon as I saw them and knew that I would find some use for them. They are about the same length as a clothespin and have a strong grip. You can get them at Amazon.

So, here's how I decided to use one of them. I tied a bird clip to the end of a piece of yarn that I hung in my classroom doorway. The string is attached to a magnet that I can move to any position I need. If I have an important message/note that I don't want to forget, I clip it to the bird so it <strike>hits me in the head</strike> reminds me not to forget the important message. Has your school secretary ever called your classroom with an important message for a student, but the student wasn't in your room at the moment, and you thought you would remember to tell the student BUT you forgot?? Well, this little birdie has saved me on many occasions.
The countdown has begun. I have 16 days before I go back to school. YIKES! My classroom is ready and I'm currently working on curriculum planning and a few other things that save learning time once school begins.

I'd like to share how I use math crayon tins to save learning time during math. My school district uses Saxon Math. If you are familiar with Saxon Math, then you know that the kids need one or more of the 8 basic colors of crayons to complete some parts of their math worksheets on a daily basis. Well, when kids need a red crayon, for example, there are always kids that can't find their red. Sometimes they need two or three different colors and they may have two of them and not the other. I don't like wasting class time having kids look through their desks for a particular color of a crayon. So, what's a teacher to do?

Here's what I have been using for many years and it works great! I put the 8 basic colors in an Altoid tin and put a name label on the lid. Names will be added once I get my class list.

These are stored in a plastic basket labeled "Math Crayons."

The tins are passed out only during math time. The kids always have the 8 basic colors they need in their tin. There's no need to look in their desk. Occasionally someone will say, "My green crayon is missing!" Well, I planned for that too. I have two caddies that hold the 8 basic colors, so kids know where to go if one of their crayons turns up missing. When we are done with math, I always ask the kids to check their tins and make sure they have all 8 of their crayons.
My blogging friend, Tammy, from Forever in First shared the new Helper Chart she made the other day for her first grade classroom. It turned out so darn cute that it inspired me to make a new chart for my classroom. I haven't used one for quite a while, so my old one was really showing its age. You can check out Tammy's {Here} and mine below.

I started with a 14"x30" magnetic board from IKEA.

Next, I got some scrapbooking supplies at Hobby Lobby to jazz it up!

I also got these colorful, circular brads from Hobby Lobby. I will be putting numbers on them after the kids pick which color they like best.

I got some round magnets at Walmart to put on the back of the brads. I just bent the prongs back and forth until they came off and them added a magnet.

Next, I typed a list of the jobs I wanted on the board. I printed the list on white printable magnetic paper. Then, I cut out each one.

Finally, I used some adhesive letters for the title "Job Chart."

Here's a few close ups of the board.
I've been very busy working in my classroom this summer because I moved from the first floor of my school building to the second floor. Why, you ask? Well, I will be teaching 2nd grade instead of 1st this year. I will be looping with my kids from last year. I've looped before and really liked it, so I am looking forward to doing it again.

I've made a Smilebox slideshow of what I've accomplished in my classroom so far. I've written a caption under each picture, so I hope you can see it. When I previewed this on Blogger, I couldn't see the caption. Maybe when I post it, it will be visible.

Enjoy!
My classroom walls are full of bulletin boards and tack strips. I always find ways to use them, but I have one long, narrow bulletin board above my chalkboard that has been divided in half by my Smart Board. So, I have two smaller boards to decorate. Here's what I came up with for one of them. I used the title of Beatrice Schenk de Regniers' poem "Keep a Poem in Your Pocket" for the wording. I used 2" black letters for that. Then I cut a pocket from an old pair of jeans and tucked a poem inside. Here's how it turned out.
I love poetry and use lots of it in my classroom. I plan to hang my poetry chart on the chalkboard below this board.

Here's my inspiration from Pinterest. I think I will type the poem and add it to my pocket like it is here.
