I've Been BOOED!

Hi Friends!

I've been BOOED by my sweet friend, Tammy, over at Forever in First.  She
was one of my first followers and I just love her blog.  Please take the time to visit
her and I PROMISE you that you won't be disappointed.

Here are some wonderful books and activities for October.

If you don't have this book, you are missing out!  It's a great read aloud for all
grades.  My student teacher read this to my first graders and then had them predict how many seeds
were in our pumpkin.  Next, she carved the pumpkin and had the kids put the seeds in groups of ten.
The kids counted 491 seeds in all!
Finally, she roasted the pumpkin seeds and we ate them for our snack!

The kids made groups of ten seeds and put them on paper plates to
make them easier to count.

This is my favorite book for teaching kids how to use speech bubbles.
After reading the book, the kids shared what they are going to be for Halloween.
Then, each of the kids made a page for a class big book called  What Will You Be for Halloween?
Here's a couple of pages from our book.

I just bought this book called Little Goblins Ten by Pamela Jane.
It can be read to the tune of Over in the Meadow. There's some great vocabulary in this book!
The pictures are fabulous, too!!  The illustrator is Jane Manning.

This is another new book I just purchased.  It's a National Geographic Kids book
by Jill Esbaum.  It's filled with fun facts and beautiful photographs.

THANKS to Tammy for the BOO!

Desk Clutter, Oh My!

Hi Friends!
Does the clutter in some of your students' desks make it difficult for them to find things in a hurry?
If so, here's a couple of ideas I got from a friend that teaches first grade.  Her name is
Amanda and she was nice enough to let me take some pictures to share with you.
Take a look!
The cloth desk pocket is held in place with plastic gutter hooks that are normally used for holiday lights.
The blue plastic cup has a lip that holds it securely in place.  She bought the cups at IKEA.
Amanda has the kids put their math crayons, scissors, glue, highlighter and pencil inside the cup so
there's no searching through their desks for these often used items.

Coin Storage

Hi Friends!
I found the perfect containers for storing coins that I use for my math lessons.
They are the Glad 4 oz plastic containers with lids.
I filled each container with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
Now when I have a math lesson that requires coins, I can just pass out the containers
and ask students to take out what they need for that particular lesson.
Check them out!

Sight Word Wallets

Hi Friends!
Here's an idea I use to get my kids excited about practicing their sight words at home.
I make a "word wallet" for each student that holds sight words they need to learn.
They're easy to make.  All you need are some two pocket folders, stickers, and 3x5 index cards.
You cut the two pocket folders in half.  Keep the bottom half for the wallet.
Add students' names and decorate with a few stickers.
Inside the wallet, write "Practice" on the left pocket and "I know these!" on the right pocket.
Add sight word cards to the wallet & send them home with the kids.
As they learn words, the cards are moved from the "Practice" side of the wallet to the
"I know these!" side.  I use incentives to encourage my students to practice their words at home.
Word wallets can be brought back to school when a student is ready for me to test him/her.
Although we work on sight words throughout the school day, I am accountable for making
sure that each and every student learns all of the 175 first grade sight words.  Using Word
Wallets is just another way to encourage students to practice these words at home.
Practice makes permanent!

Growing Beanstalks in Your Classroom!

Hi Friends!
Jack and the Beanstalk was one of my favorite stories when I was a kid.  I remember
thinking how much fun it would be to climb the beanstalk and walk around high above
the clouds.  It was such a magical story for me when I was little.   It's still one of my favorites.
It just so happens that Mrs. Lovell, an AWESOME 4th grade teacher at my school,
is growing beanstalks in her classroom.  Yep, you heard that right!  Beanstalks...growing in her classroom!  Now, they're not very big yet, but soon they'll grow as high as the ceiling.
Here are some pictures that show how she's doing it!!
(Wouldn't students of all ages love watching their beanstalks grow?)

The bean plants are growing in plastic cups.  A long string is taped on the counter behind each cup and
strectched to the ceiling where it is tied to a ceiling clip.

This is a book that Mrs. Lovell uses with this project.

"Fee fi fo fum!" said the Giant.

Hi Friends!
I recently found an awesome book called The Giant Book of Giants by Saviour Pirotta.
It has six stories about giants from around the world.  My favorite one is Jack and the Beanstalk.
What makes this book awesome is the 3-D Giant that comes with the book.
It's over 4 feet tall!!  When you open the book, there's a pocket on the left that says,
"WARNING! There's a giant inside..."
The 3-D poster is tucked inside the pocket.
It is TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
Take a look!!

BOO! Sight Word Game

Hi Friends!
I found two really cute Halloween tins at Walmart ($1.47 each) and knew that I could come up
with a way to use them in my classroom.  So, here's what I came up with.
I made a spin-off of the game "POP."  My version has sight words written on
ghosts and pumpkins.  I made about 15 - 20 sight words for each tin.
Each tin also includes at least 2  BOO! cards.
Here's how you play:
Students take turns reaching inside the tin and pulling
out a sight word card.  They must read the word correctly in order to keep it.  Otherwise,
it goes back in the tin.   If someone pulls out the card that says, "BOO!" then
that student must put all of his cards back in the tin and start over.
When time is up, the player with the most cards wins.
