Sight Words

Hi Friends,
Here's another use for those mini photo albums you can buy at the Dollar Store. I fill them with sight words.  It's easy for kids to turn the pages and it's harder to lose the word cards.  I just take out the ones they learn and replace them with new words. 

I found these albums at the Dollar Store.

I popped in a picture of each student for the cover.

I used a 4 X 6 index card to write the words.

Sometimes I put word and a sentence with the word.

Sight Word Wallets

Hi Friends!

Here's an idea I use to get my kids excited about practicing their sight words at home.

I make a "word wallet" for each student that holds sight words they need to learn.

They're easy to make.  All you need are some two pocket folders, stickers, and 3x5 index cards.

You cut the two pocket folders in half.  Keep the bottom half for the wallet.

Add students' names and decorate with a few stickers.

Inside the wallet, write "Practice" on the left pocket and "I know these!" on the right pocket.

Add sight word cards to the wallet & send them home with the kids.
As they learn words, the cards are moved from the "Practice" side of the wallet to the
"I know these!" side.  I use incentives to encourage my students to practice their words at home.
Word wallets can be brought back to school when a student is ready for me to test him/her.
Although we work on sight words throughout the school day, I am accountable for making
sure that each and every student learns all of the 175 first grade sight words.  Using Word
Wallets is just another way to encourage students to practice these words at home.
Practice makes permanent!
 



Sight Words

We all know how important it is for our students to know sight words.  In my school

district we have a list of sight words for each grade level.  There are 50 words for kindergarten,

174 words for first grade and 100 for second grade.  It's my job to make sure my students

master all 174 words by the end of the school year.  I practice these words with my students

in a variety of different ways.  I'd like to share a couple of them with you.

I have a Power Point slide show that I play on a big screen every morning that has sight words or sight word phrases.  The kids read the words as they appear and then disappear, one by one, on the screen.  I play a game with them called "Beat the Teacher."  They have to say the sight word before I say it.  The Power Point slide show is set up by quarters;  Quarter 1 sight words

 are first, followed by Q. 2 and so on.  We work on one quarter at a time until it is mastered.

Another thing I do daily to practice sight words with my students is simply have them read a list of the words. I have a list of sight words by quarter that I pass out to each student before I begin my

guided reading lesson.  We read the words aloud together.  At first we read them in order and then

we mix it up.  We also practice sight words in context through a variety of different

 reading and writing activities every day.
